What to expect on a Dearborn River float
The Dearborn River is a freestone river that is fed by Rocky Mountain snowmelt in the Spring and early Summer. Because of this, water levels can fluctuate greatly depending on various factors; snowpack from the winter, the time of the year and current weather conditions. This makes a Dearborn River float a rare and exciting adventure that can create lifelong memories. Due to unpredictable river conditions, floaters should be prepared for exposure to sun, rain, and temperatures that may change throughout the day.
Safety is a top consideration on the Dearborn River. Every Montana Watershed trip has at least one certified Swiftwater Rescue technician with specific safety equipment for the river being floated.
The scenic section we float is approximately 18 miles of rugged, volcanic landscape with limited access and far less float pressure than the nearby Missouri River. These trips offer outstanding opportunities for landscape photography and a wilderness river trip that can be completed in long day or as an overnight glamping getaway. Our camping trips include travel to and from the river, riverside meals, and top-quality canvas tents for two with comfortable cots and warm sleeping bags.
